Fairbanks, Alaska... One of the Coldest Places on Earth

11 of the 20 coldest places on EARTH are in Alaska... just lovely! It looks as though we're in for yet MORE lovely cold weather.  My meterologist client mentioned in an email earlier that we're very likely to see -60 again in the Interior.  As if that's not enough, he says, and I quote "Note that I do see an end to the cold pattern ... models are showing a shift, but it is still going to take at least 8-10 days for the shift to happen." Eight to ten more days? This is starting to feel like the winters of 20 years ago.

Old man winter is beginning to cause serious havock with Interior Alaska residences.  Water lines and septic systems are freezing, furnaces and boilers are dying and there have been more plumbing freeze-ups than the plumbing community can keep up with even with extra staff.

I read an article tonight that referenced the coldest places on earth.  Imagine my surprise (not) to find that 11 of the 20 coldest places on earth are in Alaska

Until the weather lifts we're going to do what everyone else is doing... staying inside.  Oh, wait... I do have showings tomorrow.  The good news is that buyers looking at homes when the temps are hitting 50 below zero MUST be serious. Stay warm, folks.  It ain't over yet!

Look ma, it's Widefoot!

OMG, you have to know what you are doing to live in such extreme cold! Guess if I decide to live in Alaska, I better have my Cowboy (or rugged Alaskan mountain man) to help keep me warm.

Warming up to 50 below...break out the suntan lotion. Jesse, sometimes I think your area with the burst of cold is like on another planet. Wow, is all I can say.

Where do I start?  What do you do?  How do people survive in that kind of weather?  I am very worried about you.

We've already talked about this, there is something wrong with you if you can live through those temperatures.

Jesse, now that is what I call a fashion statement!  And to think you show houses in this weather!  I am such a wimp.

And here all these years I thought that Minnesota had the honor of being the coldest place on Earth.

I thought my sister in law in Minot, ND was cold, but I want her to see this.  WOW.  If you ever decide to move somewhere warmer I got a nice big lake near by me.  It's 62 here today.

Jesse - I do not know about Alaska, but I think Oymyakon (-96.2F record) is the coldest in the northern Hemisphere, followed by Verkhoyansk (-88.1) but they do not have wind at those very low temperatures, and it is different from where I lived, where the lowest I experienced was -61.7F, but it always was with the wind, and at these temperatures even a slight wind of 10 meters per second was terrible.

The most dangerous though were those rare but notorious double 30s, when the temperature is - 30 with the wind 30 meters a second, which is a ferocious blizzard. People in Vorkuta remember one, when 16 people died, some on the steps of their homes.

When I got to the Arctic, I was very light, and could only hold winds up to 19 meters per second. Anything more than that made me fly. 10 yers later I could handle 25-26 meters per second. But only in usual blizzards, which are warm.

Stay warm and be careful.

Hi Jesse, Happy new year!  I sure hope you get some warmer weather soon.  At this point, 0 degrees would probably feel warm to you!  You're brave to show property in that, and I promise to try not to whine when I have to go out in 60 degree drizzles - we're so spoiled in California.

And, here I was commenting on someone else's blog that I thought 50 was cold; that's 50 above, not below, zero.  I think I'll stick with my Southern California winters.
